About Yambuko

Person-centred counselling in Leamington Spa.

Our philosophy

Yambuko was founded on a single belief that with the right support, we can all move through difficulty and find our way to a better version of ourselves. As a practice offering person-centred counselling in Leamington Spa, everything here is built around you, your pace and what is happening in your world.

Cross over to a better version of yourself

With the right support, we can all move through difficulty and transition towards a better version of ourselves. This inspired the name of the practice, Yambuko.

Yambuko is a Shona word from the language spoken by the people of Zimbabwe.

Yambuko reflects the support we give as people move towards better versions of themselves. It speaks to transition, progress and the idea of being guided from one place to another.

Each person we work with is on a quest for their own crossing. We’re here to accompany you through it.

It all started with a conversation

In 2006, my sister asked me what I’d be doing if I wasn’t in my current line of work. Without skipping a beat, I said I’d be a psychological therapist. Though the idea was not constantly at the top of my mind, it did not leave me.

That’s because when I needed support at different points in my life, I was fortunate to be helped by skilled counsellors who made a real difference. They inspired me more than they probably knew.

By 2010 I was actively exploring a route into training. A conversation with a friend who works as a psychiatrist pointed me in the right direction. And by September that year, I was enrolled at Warwick University studying person-centred counselling and psychotherapy.

I fell in love with the person-centred approach. I found it deeply empowering and it suited my personality completely.

People who know me well would describe me as empathic, caring and someone who listens well. I have been told that I have a gift for explaining things clearly and making people feel welcome, which I hope comes through in my practice.

Outside of the practice I also work for a mental health charity supporting people in crisis and helping reduce immediate distress for those at risk of self-harm, suicide or experiencing trauma.

I also advocate for intentional rest, restoration and resetting. These things are so important for our wellbeing, yet often left to the bottom of lists if they ever make it there in the first place. To practice what I preach, to restore, I knit. There is something grounding about it and I won’t pretend I don’t get giddy when a finished piece comes together. What drives all of this is seeing people heal, change for the better, evolve and blossom. That is the outcome I am working towards, for people to live mentally healthy lives.
